Summitview had it's monthly DRiVE day on last week's early dismissal day. This is a day when teachers are free to plan whatever instructional activities they like in order to support learner choice, mastery, and understanding of the purpose of the unit of instruction. Fifth grade learners were scientists during a recent bird beak adaptation lab. Learners made a hypothesis by matching birds to what they believe would be their primary prey based on their beaks.

On November 7th, gifted 5th grade learners across WASD competed in the Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl against other teams in the Northeast Division of the United States. This group of eight learners earned 2nd place, losing only by five points to the first place team. This yearly competition is a self-scoring, computer contest of 100 multiple-choice questions. The test runs approximately one hour, depending on the speed of the answers - bonus points are awarded for speed! Areas include math, geography, government, sports, spelling, science, literature, English, history, general information, and just fun trivia. It is a team activity with all contestants around one computer. In April, the team will compete again – that time versus teams from all 50 states.
Learners in Mrs. Yost's class recently created metamorphic rocks using extreme heat and pressure on Starbursts!
Learners in Mrs. Warren's class recently reviewed for an upcoming assessment in math using an application called Kahoot. Kahoot is it a online game that test students knowledge in a given subject or skill.
Friday is the last day to turn in items for our annual Homelessness Awareness Week Drive. We are seeking dental hygiene items, hair products, baby items, soap of all types, paper products, personal items (lotion, chapstick, bandaids, etc...).
As part of their unit on the structures & functions of life, 4th grade learners recently took apart owl pellets to see what type of animals they ate.
If we define "technology" as "a tool to help us solve a problem," here are fifth grade learners using "technology" in the form of writing on their desks, to solve math problems. It's so cool that desks wipe off just like a white board!

The Waynesboro Area School District will host a Town Hall Presentation at the Waynesboro Area Senior High School Library on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at 7:00pm. The address for the event is 550 E. 2nd Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268.
The District will present information on budgets, tax and financial history, the effects of hold harmless on state funding, unfunded mandates and district achievements.
All members of the community are welcome to join the District for this presentation. An opportunity for time for questions and answers will be provided.
Winter weather is fast approaching! SV learners have two recess breaks daily. We strive to take each of these breaks outside, however, it is not always possible with weather.
All WASD elementary buildings will go outside for recess when “real feel” temperatures are above 25 degrees F. When “real feel” temperatures fall below 25 degree Fahrenheit, recess breaks will be moved indoors. Please make sure your child comes to school prepared to be outside with a winter coat, hat, gloves, and scarf.
