NJROTC

Hello families,

We are excited to announce a partnership between the Chambersburg Area School District and other public high schools in Franklin County that will allow Waynesboro students to participate in the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) at Chambersburg Area Senior High School (CASHS)!

NJROTC is a wonderful opportunity for students interested in a career in the United States Military to begin their training while still enrolled in high school. The NJROTC program was established by Public Law in 1964 which may be found in Title 10, US Code, Chapter 102. The program is conducted at accredited secondary schools throughout the nation and taught by instructors who are retired Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officers, as well as enlisted personnel. The NJROTC accredited curriculum emphasizes citizenship and leadership development, as well as maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics such as the fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, navigation, and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented through the year by extra-curricular activities of community service, academic, athletic, drill, and orienteering competitions, field meets, flights, visits to naval or other activities, marksmanship sports training, and physical fitness training. Electronic classroom equipment and textbooks are provided by the Navy. For a more detailed overview of the NJROTC program please review NJROTC - Info for Parents.

WASHS will be able to send up to six students (graduating cohorts 2026, 2027, or 2028) to NJROTC for the 2024-25 school year. Selected students will be transported to CASHS each morning for their first period class (8:00-8:50 am) and will return to WASHS before the start of 2nd block.

All accepted NJROTC Cadets must abide by the following criteria:

  • Submit a completed Cadet Health Risk Screening Questionnaire

  • NJROTC Student Code of Conduct, including hair, grooming, and physical training. To learn more, please read the Cadet Reference Manual and the Cadet Field Manual.

  • Cadets will wear the uniform (provided to all cadets) to CASHS and WASHS on Wednesdays.

  • Cadets will wear NJROTC polo shirts (provided) and khaki pants to CASHS and WASHS on Fridays.

  • Understand that there will be some REQUIRED days of full day attendance at CASHS and that any WASHS school work missed must be made up in accordance with the WASD Assignment Completion Policy.

    • Saturday, August 24, 2024: New Cadet Orientation, 8:00 am - 2:00 pm

    • Monday, August 26, 2024: Parent/Guardian Open House (time TBA)

    • March 4-5, 2025: Annual NJROTC Inspection
