Dear WASD Parent/Guardian,

We want to take this time to thank you for assisting your child during the COVID-19 school closure planned instruction phase. We understand that this has been a challenging time and we appreciate your support in maintaining the academic requirements since April 14, 2020. Overall, as a district we are very pleased with the response from our learners. Although it was not an ideal situation, teachers have created standards aligned assignments, projects, and assessments for learners to complete. On both the elementary and secondary level, we provided instruction via technology and with non-digital resources. Principals, teachers, counselors, and para educators have followed up with learners and parents throughout this process. On the elementary level, our learners will be assigned a pass/fail grade for the 3rd trimester period with a comment to reflect the learner's engagement in the planned instruction. A learner's final grade will be based on the 1st and 2nd trimesters. On the secondary level, learners will be assigned a grade based on the completion of work during the 4th marking period and a final grade will be determined by all four marking periods. We attempted to offer our WASD learners the very best during the school closure with our planned instruction approach, we unfortunately know that all learners/families did not elect to fully engage in this planned instruction. Today marks the last two weeks of planned instruction and our hope is that learners/families will use this opportunity to complete assignments. Your teachers, counselors, and principals are all available to help so we are encouraging learners and parents to e-mail or call the school office if you need assistance. All 9th-12th grade assignments must be turned in by Tuesday, May 26th at 11:59 pm. All K8 assignments must be turned in by Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at 3:00 pm and grades will be posted on the Sapphire Community Portal by June 3, 2020. On behalf of the Waynesboro Area School District, I want to thank you for your role in supporting your child's education. We recognize this has been a challenging situation. You were asked to manage planned instruction at home, maintain your own work schedules, and balance other home/child responsibilities. I applaud all the efforts of our principals, teachers, support staff, learners and families. We are hopeful to reconnect with our families over the course of the summer. Thank you for your partnership in supporting all our learners and stay healthy and BOROStrong!

Sincerely, Rita Sterner-Hine, WASD Assistant Superintendent
